GlandsLymph nodes play an important part in the body's defense against infection. Swelling might occur even if the infection is trivial or not apparent. When the lymph nodes swell they generally result from localized or systemic infection, abscess formation, or malignancy.

The most common cause of lymph node enlargement is infection, but there are other rare cases. When swelling appears suddenly and is painful, it is usually caused by injury or an infection. The enlargement that comes on gradually and painlessly may result from malignancy or tumor. All and any type of infection is grounds to come in and see Dr. Whong.

Sinus Problems
Nose bleedBleeding from the nose is a common problem which usually stops by itself. In patients with more severe bleeding, (epistaxis).
Dr. Phillip Whong can control it  by "packing" or placing material in the nose to apply pressure to the area. If after the treatment the patient continues to bleed, Dr. Whong is also well qualified to perform surgery, but this is only in the most extreme cases.

What Causes Earaches?
EarThe cause of the earache can be divided into different causes. Most commonly I see earaches coming from an outer ear infection which comes from the handling of the ear with Q-Tips, fingertips, or even other small objects people use because of itchy ears. I feel very strongly that one should not use any Q-Tips around the ear because that Q-tip (cotton-tipped applicators) can cause hearing loss by pushing the wax in, injury to the ear canal, draining ears, and even a hole in the eardrum. I think that keeping Q-Tips or other small objects out of the ear is very important as it has been said for a long time. The earache can also come from middle ear infections, which are sometimes due to the common cold or associated with upper respiratory infections. These kinds of problems can be resolved quickly with proper antibiotic treatment. There are earaches caused by the surrounding structures of the ear. It could be from a temporomandibular joint (TMJ) problem. It could also be from chewing muscle pain which is a mild condition; however this also could be annoying. The earache could also come from some lesion in the throat such as infection, tumor or even cancer in the back of the nose or in the throat or even the base of the tongue. This could cause severe relentless pain which is quite ominous and should be examined as soon as possible when the patient has an earache that does not resolve.

What About "Draining Ear"?
A chronically draining ear is most commonly due to a middle ear infection, but it could also be due to external ear irritation, such as cleaning the ear out with a Q-Tip. People with draining ears from a hole in the eardrum should keep water out of the ears so that the water does not cause more infection in the middle ear. These conditions by and large can be treated very successfully with antibiotic treatment, and also if need be, a surgical procedure can be done to repair the eardrum and have hearing restored. It has been my experience that these procedures are very successful, and I think there is no reason that people should suffer from it.
